The Pilfering of Hey Crackhead

September 26th, 2007 · 10 Comments

For those of you who don't know, Hip E. (writing as the mysterious "Matt") is the author of that semi-famous craigslist post "Hey Crackhead".  A simple google search for "hey crackhead" will educate you as to the extent of the craze.  We often joke that Hey Crackhead "was" the high-point of Hip E.'s comedic career.  This is true: it's hard to see him ever topping it.  In short, Hey Crackhead is quite simply one of the funniest things ever written.  None of my attempts will likely ever touch it ("Worst Cave Scenario" and "Top Ten Craziest Bitches" included).

For the moment, though, I would like to focus on the pilfering of Hey Crackhead, which is a phenomenon that I'm sure occurs with lots of internet writing.  Tons of people have taken Hey Crackhead and posted it as their own work or the work of their friends (these links are just two examples).  But just this afternoon someone told me a story over lunch about how they got sparkplugs stolen from their motorcycle in the Tenderloin and they considered just taping two sparkplugs to the outside bike to forestall the theft of installed plugs.  Come on now, dude.

The internet has created a new world of anonymity and unaccountability.  And these traits demand heightened respect for property and ideas.  You didn't write Hey Crackhead.  Hip E. did.  With the help of serendipity and the grace of God, Hip E. did.

Ensenada the dark crucifix, the dead seal, ghost of the dead car son; STOP THE CAR!! I’m getting out! I can’t take it. Hey look out there’s somebody coming and there’s nothing you can do about it..

If Hip E. went to Cal, and was a Sigma Chi, then the second site on there may have gotten it right.

Hey what the fuck. Is that Dwyermaker’s blog? Salty D? 1/4 of the famed Alpha Beta Hoosiers?

Dwyermaker is damned prolific on that there blog. They have about 3 posts a day.

It is a terrible thing to maximize your writing/comedic/social relevance in your early twenties while posting on Craigslist, but at least you’ll always have that uproariously funny moment to look back on Hippy.

Damn, I think I peaked at headlights. Sad.

That is indeed Dwyermaker. He and I put up the crackhead post because we liked it so much. He’d told me the story a few times.

    Let the record reflect:

100% injury rate is 100% exonerated.
