THE JO-TEL …believes some of what Nathaniel and John say, but believes England is still our sovreign

Here’s something. You know in a dream, sometimes you talk to people. This morning in my dream, a girl said something to me, and I was about to answer her, but right then I realized I was kind of waking up. I had one foot in the dream and one foot in my bedroom, and as Proust says all the objects in my room were hustling back from their various orbits, rushing from all over the universe to arrange themselves in their proper places just before I stepped across the threshold. But this girl had just said something to me, and it would have been rude not to answer. However, as I rapidly came more awake (thinking about the fact that you are dreaming will do that to you) the idea of answering her was getting more and more absurd. But at the last possible instant, the nagging itch of wanting to acknowlege her won out, and just a second before I opened my eyes, I heard myself say out loud, ”alright, thank you” to a girl who, by that time, I knew had never been there.
