Beside the devastation, it’s amazing to see a San Francisco without the bridges, Coit Tower, hi-rises, etc. I suspect this was taken from a hot air balloon.

It was actually. That photo was part of an exhibit at SF MOMA. The dude who took it had just basically invented aerial photography, or rather a type of panoramic camera and mabe some new lens. It’s been a while, but anyhow the photos were commissioned by the city to assess the damage from the earthquake. I seem to remember him charging them a fortune, which they willingly paid.
