This Network Moments comes on the heels of Turd Ferugson’s decidedly dubious slight on early Beatles songs…

HIP E.: Any statement about not getting into the beatles should be followed by “yet.” I’m jealous of anybody who still gets to look forward to getting into the Beatles, the best band ever.

TURD FERGUSON: Sorry dood, they’re early stuff is crap (to me).

SHARK: I’ve been recently very much into their early stuff. Meet the Beatles, Beatles for Sale, etc. Maybe just bc I’ve exhausted the later stuff, but there’s a nice exuberance to their early stuff. It’s all pretty choppy and one-offed, which makes it fun.

Beatles rule.

TURD: I just don’t like the pop shit love potion 9, help!, love me do and all that stuff.

SHARK: I can understand your stance, even though I personally feel differently. However, “Help!” is usually considered a harbinger of the experimental Beatles stage. Mainly because it tackles more complex issues like, um, needing “help,” not just needing love.

BAIN: Yeah, I’ve met a troubling number of people entirely unfamiliar with the beatles catalog. That was where my friend Tom “No Remorsin’ ” Thorson’s parents and their vast cd collection came in handy when I was a kid. [Turd], Im pretty sure I’ve never heard a beatles version of love potion number 9. I think the radio version is by the searchers.

TURD: okay but that wasn’t the point. the point was i certainly do not like their early pop stuff.

BAIN: I agree, the beatles early pop songs like “hey hey we’re the monkees” are totally lame.

There is no “late” Beatles, if it weren’t for the “early” Beatles. In fact, most people love the band because they were able to start as a pop band and transition their sound and style into more complex music later on.

The other great thing about the early Beatles is how much they riffed off early black rock n’ roll music. The Beatles truly revered what many of the American R&B, blues, blues-rock, and rock n’ roll artists were doing. Their early stuff borrowed from that catalog and started to bring the genre to the forefront of popular music.

    Early Beatles rule.

The fact that The Beatles were only famous for like six years before they broke up blows my mind. And in their seven years of releasing albums, they put out thirteen - and almost all of them are considered “classics”.

    The Beatles rule.

I wipe my bloated ass with their entire back catalog.

The Beatles do rule. But just because they rule doesn’t mean I have to like “Help”. Because I don’t.

True. Nobody has to like “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” either. Actually Heather Mills probably likes it because it represents like 74,000 pounds sterling to her.

I like “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” better than “Something”.

Seriously. That divorce cost Paul an arm. But not a leg.

As bad as it is, at least “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” is better than their early stuff, like “Champagne Supernova.”

Way to steal Bain’s joke, Hip E.

Although that reminds me of the time that a guy I knew in high school “wrote” his girlfriend a poem entitled “Wonderwall”. She loved it; it was sweet, it was tender, it was endearing. It was also written by Noel Gallagher - a fact she quickly discovered when she showed it to her friends at lunch.

Interesting fact: “Wonderwall” was named after (and strongly influenced by) the first solo album released by one of The Beatles: George Harrison’s “Wonderwall Music”.

    Thrill,

The comment you made, at 3:09, was dumb.

  • Shark // Apr 23, 2008 at 7:04 pm

I agree. In stark contrast to the 3:17 comment, which was great.

  • Thrill // Apr 24, 2008 at 12:21 pm

    Well no-thanks and thanks.
