Major ______ de Coverly, We Hardly Knew Thee

July 4th, 2007 · No Comments

As if emerging from the soft dawn that fell over the liberated city, Major ______ de Coverly strolled through the streets of Bolgna, his face unlookably stoic in the morning air. Bolgna had not been liberated. Yossarian had moved the map lines to avoid the bomb raid that would have solidified the allied presence there. What is politics? All strife fled before the puissant gait of Major _____ de Coverly, however, and the still-occupied nature of Bogna did not impress itself upon him, the milky savior. “The idea of the noumena meaning anything — not the mention everything– is a stupid one,” he didn’t have to think. The mornings were beautiful when flowers did not have to be thrown. Viewing the birth of the fruit stands in the market square, the Major, navigating the gentle cobbles of the main street, carefully lit and smoked his cigar, each puff chiseling clouds into the clear blue sky.

The breeze of the afternoon began to soothe gently when Major ____ de Coverly, hands poised on the chest of his smoking jacket, ambled, Jesus-like, out into the horizon to take his place, like a glass eye, in the fearful heights of disappearance. Major Major Major Major sat in his barracks, like the rest of us, unaware.

And somewhere Clevinger was walled up in the clouds.
