Shark’s post made me think about that stupid show. Not so much the sheer improbability of people taking a 16 year old doctor seriously or how his best friend was a retarded Italian guy who, of course, was so “normal” and so Doog’s connection to being a normal 16 year old that he always came through the window. Wild. Anyway, I am also speaking of the journal, but instead of the mode of Doogie’s journal writing (computer v. handwritten), I was more intrigued by the style. As in, he only wrote one sentence every day, possibly two on special occasions. Which, by the way, is totally understandable, especially on those mundane days where nothing happens, or, you’ve been writing in your journal for like three years and you are just sick of writing long entries about how you ran out of butter for your toast that morning or how amazing it is that you hit every red light on the way to work that morning or how you were supposed to study that day in Berkeley but you bought 4 latte’s and all the study halls were full etc. Also, everything was a lesson, as in, “in the past, I thought Sarah Palin was a promising GILF, but today I learned after the Katie Couric interview, that she was just a retarded GILF and would probably be a lot easier to bone.” So it seems to me nothing cool EVER happened to that kid, because he would have wrote more about it. Or conversely, being a 16 year old doctor, he was such a nerd that, by nature, of course nothing cool happened to him because nobody likes a nerd. Anyway, the sad part is, every day his entire world view, some part of his life he’d always been brought up to believe in, some inner fabric of his being shaped by life experiences and the people around him was brought to a freakish reversal by some dickhead doctor or some patient with a butt disease. *** Catchy theme song though.
***Disclaimer: I’ve only seen like, 8 total episodes of Doogie Howser. The last one somewhere in 1991.
