I’m a huge Banksy fan, and I ran across this recently on his website. It’s an obvious homage to Lascaux (for comparison, see below), and a great critique of the anti-grafitti culture.

Not that I’m pro-all-grafitti – I fucking HATE sloppy tags and throw ups – but some stuff out there is just great, and ought to be left around for a while. Especially most of the stuff Banksy has done. If we have to deal with billboards and posters and bills crap all throughout our cities, we should also get to look at public artwork as well, at least for a time. Banksy, Blek Le Rat, Jordan Seiler, ABOVE, Gaia… a lot of the stuff you see on Wooster Collective, honestly.
Anyway, the comparison shot, with Lascaux on top (duhrrrr):

Great, great grafitti.

There is some great grafitti out there. Unfortunately, 90% of grafitti is shit.

I once saw this really disheveled looking graffiti artist with his pants around his ankles, squatting and doing his graffiti right there in public. I didn’t realize it was graffiti at the time.
