We need to savor the good things while we can, because if history has taught us anything, it’s that politicians or businessmen or overpopulation will eventually ruin them for everyone. Things like the sound of birds chirping outside your window on a bright summer morning. A campsite with nobody else around. A secluded swimmin’ hole.
One of these things that I just remembered is that thing where in a televised basketball game, the ref makes a questionable call that goes against the home team. Pretty soon about a third of the crowd in the stadium is chanting “Bullll-Shit… Bullll-Shit… Bullll-Shit…” With the way they mic up stadiums for TV, you can clearly hear this at home. It’s great because you know somewhere some censor or ad executive or nanny-state government regulator is cringing and fingering his rosary beads, but what are they going to do, mute the feed after every bad call? It’s part of what makes sports great.
A sort of adjunct to this is when they cue up a slow motion replay of a player or coach who is all fired up about something, and you clearly see his lips enunciating in high definition “Thaaaaaaaattttttttt’ssssss ffffuuuuuckkkiiinnng buuuuullllllllsshhhhiiiiiiittttttt aaaand yooooooouuuuuu knooooooooowwwwww iiiiiiittttt!!!” In almost every case, the announcers realize what just happened, chuckle, and say something like “…Flip Saunders clearly upset about that call.”
